The EDF Group isdeveloping production resources in France that use allenergy sources -nuclear, fossil-fuel burning (coal, heating oil, natural gas) andrenewable energy (hydraulic, solar, wind and biomass).
Thedevelopmentof renewable energy, which contributes increasingly to theGroup’senergy mix, is a strategic priority. As a leader in renewableenergy,EDF already produces 8% of its electricity from hydraulicenergy.Together with nuclear, this means that 95% of the EDFGroup’selectricity production in France is free from CO2 emissions and makesan essential contribution to the country’s, and more widely, theEuropean zone’s, security of supply.
EDFis investing to improve theprofitability of other types of renewableenergy and backstechnological innovation. It pioneered the use of thesea’s energy.
Thetechnology developed at the La Rance(Ille-et-Vilaine) tidal powerplant is based on the industrialexploitation of tidal energy; everyyear, for close on forty years, ithas been producing the equivalent ofthe electricity consumed by thecity of Rennes.
Armed with thisexpertise, EDF is currentlydeveloping a pilot tidal turbine system atPaimpol (Côtes d’Armor) toextract energy from tidal currents andproduce electricity.
According to EDF’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Pierre Gadonneix, “EDFhas the lowest CO2emissions of any energy producer in Europe, thanksto nuclear andhydraulic energy, and one of its priorities is todevelop renewableenergy. Ocean energy is a safe and inexhaustiblesource of electricitythat can help meet people’s growing energy needsand internationalcommitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
